Tis the Season for Allergies
Tis the Season of Allergies?
Ahh… Spring! According to merriam-webster: a time or season of growth or development. The flowers begin to bloom, the trees begin to regain their lovely leaves, and my chickens begin to remember why they were brought to the farm in the first place… eggs. A time of renewal and a time to be thankful for the cold Winter to begin to recede. Around here we love Spring, that is until the first lovely sound…aaaahhchoooo!!!!
How can I reduce allergy symptoms?
Now thankfully, I personally do not suffer from seasonal allergies. But a couple of members in the household do. The sneezing, the runny noses, itchy throats and itchy watery eyes, all familiar around here this time of year. Aside from reducing exposure to allergy triggers such as staying indoors on windy days and avoiding fresh cut grass, we typically do our best to apply a more natural approach to the misery of symptoms.
Are there natural products to reduce/improve allergies?
Esssential oils can be a great way to open up nasal passages. According to the Detroit Sinus Center, any of your favorite essential oils will do. Peppermint, spearmint, eucalyptus are all appropriate. Smell them throughout the day or even a few drops in a diffuser to fill a room. Around here we like to breathe in the lovely scent of Cheer Up Buttercup that we picked up at Bette’s Health and Wellness. Filled with the goodness of Bergamot oil, orange oil, lemon oil and other yummy scents, it is one of our households favorites.
What herbal remedies are available to reduce allergies?
Herbal remedies can also be helpful. Quercetin, a nutrient found in onions, apples and black tea has been shown to work as a histamine blocker. Stinging nettle, a perennial flower, has also been shown to work as an anti-inflammatory.
So as we continue to enjoy the bloom of nature around us, we look forward to all that comes with it. New blooms, new babies on the farm and new ways to learn how to combat seasonal allergies.
